Renewable energy moratorium passed in split vote, reduced to 240 days

Posted on

Countless visitors flock to Western Arizona each year, as one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations. But although many are welcome to soak up the Arizona sun, the solar energy industry will have to wait.

The Mohave County Board of Supervisors voted in favor of a moratorium on renewable energy (specifically, for energy overlay re-zoning) for private property throughout the county, in a 3-2 decision. A 360-day moratorium was first proposed in August by Board Chairman Travis Lingenfelter, as a response to what he called an influx of renewable energy project proposals. According to statements by Lingenfelter this month, the moratorium will allow county officials time to examine the possible environmental impact and complexity of such projects in the future. The moratorium passed on Monday was reduced to 240 days.
