New Poll: Arizonans Support Clean Air and Climate Action More than Ever
Today, the American Lung Association in Arizona released updated polling that shows Arizona voters continue to support strong actions on clean air and climate change. Arizonans also overwhelmingly want to see policies to boost clean energy and solidly support efforts to encourage the transition to pollution-free vehicles. “Arizona has some of the worst air pollution […]
MAG seeks public input on improving air quality, reducing greenhouse gas emissions
The Maricopa Association of Governments is developing a climate action plan for Maricopa and Pinal counties. The idea is to develop measures to reduce pollution and improve air quality in those counties.
Another Arizona coal power plant unit sets date to close
The Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association announced on Friday the planned closure of a coal-fired power plant in eastern Arizona. The utility said in a document dated Dec. 1 that it will seek to replace the base-level power provided by Springerville’s Station Unit 3 with 1,250 megawatts of renewable energy once it shuts down in […]
Pollution from coal-fired power plants led to hundreds of deaths in Arizona, NM, study says
An estimated 460,000 people died of causes attributed to fine particulates from coal power generating stations nationwide, according to a new study, which examined so-called “excess deaths” between 1999 and 2020. Three of the plants in the study operated in northern Arizona or in New Mexico along the edges of the Navajo Nation.
Now for Some Good News About Climate
There is no shortage of bad green-energy news. Automakers are fretting about electric-vehicle growth, higher interest rates are smashing financial plans, permitting for big projects still takes forever and offshore wind is a mess. But for every setback, there is a Sun Streams. This cluster of solar farms will cover more than 13 square miles […]
Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program
The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) has been chosen to participate in the EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program and lead in creating and implementing a regional plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants, including ozone. The EPA’s CPRG program provides $5 billion to states, local governments, tribes, and territories to tackle […]
New Renewable Energy Installations Set to Power the West
U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland announced today that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is actively working on the development of 15 new renewable energy installations across the western United States. These projects aim to contribute to the Biden administration’s goal of achieving 25 GW of onshore renewable energy capacity on public lands by 2025. […]
As APS braces for rising demand over 15 years, nonprofit says it should commit to more clean energy
Arizona Public Service recently filed a 15-year outlook on energy consumption for its customers, and one nonprofit would like to see the utility commit to using more renewable energy. APS expects increased demand by 2031, when it hopes to shutter its coal-fired plants. The utility says it remains committed to producing clean power, but also […]
It’s time for the EPA to get tough on our biggest roadway polluters: heavy-duty trucks
The transportation sector is driving climate change…quite literally. Tailpipe emissions from heavy duty trucks are a leading cause of air and climate pollution in the United States, and to drive the matter a bit closer to home, Maricopa County receives a “F” grade for particle and ozone pollution.
Lawn care goes electric
Gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment – lawn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, snow blowers and other machines – is noisy and polluting, with some machines emitting as much pollution in an hour as driving hundreds of miles in a car. And that pollution is released right in the middle of our neighborhoods, where people live and […]
