Late last month, the Tucson Unified School District’s Governing Board became the first in the state and among the first in the nation to pass a sweeping resolution intended to mitigate the effects of climate change over the next two decades. The policy passed 3-2, with dissenting board members voicing concerns about potential costs and disagreeing that climate action was within the realm of a school district’s responsibility. The policy was entirely youth-led, with Tucson students affiliated with the climate justice organization Arizona Youth Climate Coalition collaborating to research, write and lobby for it over the past 16 months.
