As heat-related deaths soar in Arizona, activists launch tree-planting initiatives

With names like “Tucson Million Trees,” “Trees are Cool” and a “Cool Corridor” program, Tucson, Mesa and Phoenix are trying to motivate residents to join the effort by providing free trees and resources to help with planting.
The effort can’t come soon enough. Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggests that Arizona’s climate conditions are becoming more extreme, and fatalities from extreme heat have spiked in recent years.
